April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time dedicated to promoting inclusion and support. It has been officially rebranded from awareness to acceptance to encourage community change.
The month begins with World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd, a United Nations-sanctioned day aimed at celebrating, accepting, and amplifying the voices of autistic individuals.
The origins of Autism Acceptance Month date back to the 1970s when it was initially designated as Autism Awareness Month to increase public knowledge about autism. Over the years, the movement has evolved from focusing solely on awareness to emphasizing acceptance and inclusion.
The shift to Autism Acceptance Month has been strongly advocated by the Autistic Community. Autistic activists and self-advocates raised concerns about the negative implications of autism awareness campaigns, which often highlighted deficits and perpetuated stigmas.
Autism Acceptance Month aims to go beyond mere awareness, focusing on changing societal attitudes towards autism, acknowledging the rights of autistic individuals, and promoting inclusive practices. It strives to highlight the strengths and unique perspectives of people on the autism spectrum, while advocating for equal opportunities, respect, and understanding.
