Oktoberfest is a world-renowned festival held annually in Munich, Germany, typically from late September to the first weekend in October
Oktoberfest dates back to October 12, 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to join the festivities held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. These fields were later named Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s meadow”) in honor of the princess, and the event became an annual tradition.
The festival usually lasts for 16-18 days, starting in late September and ending on the first Sunday in October. It begins with a grand parade led by the Münchner Kindl, followed by the official opening with a 12-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg by the Mayor of Munich. Many participants don traditional Bavarian attire, such as Lederhosen for men and Dirndls for women.
Oktoberfest is famous for its German beers served in one-liter steins, brewed within the city limits of Munich and adhering to the Reinheitsgebot (German Beer Purity Law). Food stalls offer a variety of traditional German dishes, such as pretzels, sausages, roast chicken, and sauerkraut. Oktoberfest is not only a celebration of Bavarian culture and heritage but also a significant international event that fosters a sense of community and enjoyment. It’s a remarkable blend of history, tradition, and festivity that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
