Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is an annual observance held in March to increase public awareness about developmental disabilities and promote inclusivity, acceptance, and understanding for individuals with these conditions.

There is no greater disability in society than the inability to see a person as more. - Robert M. Hensel

The month-long campaign aims to educate the public, challenge stereotypes, and highlight the unique abilities and accomplishments of people with developmental disabilities. This year’s National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) theme is A World of Opportunities:

“A World of Opportunities” – we’re celebrating people and working together to remove obstacles. Our goal is to build a community that’s committed to creating a world where everyone can do well and succeed. Join us in making a world where all kinds of people have the chance to thrive.

Throughout Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, various activities and event take place at local, national and international levels.

These often include:
  • Awareness Campaigns: Social media, posters, and other promotional materials are used to help raise awareness about developmental disabilities. Campaigns can help by dispelling myths, reducing stigma associated with disabilities and encouraging others to have empathy and understanding.
  • Collaborations and Partnerships: Communities often collaborate with local businesses, government agencies, and healthcare providers to create a supportive environment for individuals with developmental disabilities. This collaboration helps foster a sense of belonging and inclusion.
  • Education and Information Sessions: Communities organize workshops, seminars, and informative sessions to help educate the public, educators, and healthcare professionals about differences in these disabilities. They include: intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, language and learning disorders, vision impairment, and hearing loss. These events are used to share about the different types of developmental disabilities, their causes, and effective ways to support those with these conditions.
  • Inclusive Events: Many communities host inclusive events that celebrate the talents and achievements of individuals with developmental disabilities. These can include dances, art exhibitions, sports competitions, talent shows, and other performances that showcase the abilities of those with developmental disabilities.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month serves as a platform for fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society. By promoting awareness, understanding, and acceptance, the campaign contributes to breaking down barriers and creating a world where everyone, regardless of their abilities, is valued and included.
